1GB a second connection anyone?

BBC wrote an article today (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7600834.stm) which talks about the cost of upgrading broadband lines to fire optic.

The cheap option will cost £5.1 billion and will provide speeds of 30-100 Megabits per second. The more expensive option will cost £28.8bn but will provide speeds up to 1 Gigabits per second. That truly is an unbelievable speed. I know that in a few years time we will need faster connections as television and other multimedia devices will be using the net to download things but there's no getting round how quick that is.

I still recall the days of connecting to the web with my 28.8kps modem through the telephone! It's amazing how far we've come in such a short space of time.

I remember those days too, I used to go off and grab a drink while AOL dial up connected to the net (sometimes) lol.

Just hope ISP's can keep providing cheap broadband at adequate speeds, faster and faster tends to mean prices going higher and higher.

I seriously can't wait for fibre optic speeds. I too remember the ol' AOL dial-up days, I remember sending myself an email before I signed out so I could hear the "you have email" sound when I was off eating waiting for it to dial up the next day =]

the problem is that they need to upgrade everything to handle those speeds - all the switches, all the routers, all the cabling, not just the line from the exchange to your house. but once they do that it will be fantastic! think about how long it takes to download an mp3 today, as compaired to 10 years ago - 10 years ago it took all day. now it takes a few seconds. imagine being able to do that with a film ! itunes for feature length blockbuster movies on demand anyone ?

yeah in 10 years time the speed of downloading music will be a joke. You'll be downloading whole catalogues in seconds nevermind individual singles or albums.

Everything is going to be integrated with television and other devices too

BTW you talkinf of only 1GB a second check this out: http://www.thelocal.se/7869/20070712/ - World's Fastest Residential Internet Connection at 40Gbps. And this happend more than 1 year back. Well...the cost seems staggering.

And in a country like India, we haven't seen even 2Mbps Unlimited connection as yet. We get 2Mbps connections only with 2 or 5GB Download limit! :p

wow, 40 Gigabits per second connection. Thats awesome. You could stream hd quality films with that no problem!!

Well I've currently got a 20mb connection with 750 KBPS upload from Virgin Media Via fibre optic. They are meant to be upgrading me to 50mb sometime soon though although I'll need a new modem!. My connection doesn't have a download limit either!, although they do cap me if I download over 750mb in one day. I get capped to 5mb I think

I remember those 28k modems as well, I started using Internet on 56k though but one of my neighbors had a 28k modem and I remember it taking ages to download a small 1MB file. I think the speed was like half a kilobyte per second!

Nowadays most people can download that in less than 10 seconds.
