I mentioned earlier how I got Call of Duty World at War today, 2 days before the official release date.

I've been playing it all night so I thought I'd give you all my first impressions of the game. Since I got COD4 last year I've been playing it regularly. Infact I was even playing it last night, the day before I got the new one, so bear this in mind when reading my first impressions.

I played the first 6 or 7 missions in the 1 player tonight. I then played online for a few hours (currently at level 15).

The game uses an enhanced version of the cod4 engine so you will feel right at home. The graphics are very similar but at a push I would say that they are better. The buttons are all the same so if you played COD4 you will get into this very quickly.

1 player game

In the 1 player game you start off as an american (prviate miller) fighting the Japanese (you do the landing at the beaches ala saving private ryan just like medal of honour). After a few missions you then take over as Dimitri and follow a fellow sniper around the top levels of a building. This is an excellent level, you'll really enjoy it. After that you return as an American though I'mn sure you will return as another character later.

The game is set in World War 2. All the guns and weapons are different but just about everything has an equivalent from COD4 and you realise this once you start using the guns.

There are a few additions though. The flamethrower is pretty cool and of course, you get to use tanks now too.

The 1 player game is enjoyable but I wouldn't be surprised that, like the last one, it's way too short. I'm on level 7 already after just an hour or two off playing and theres only 13 levels. Nevertheless, you'll enjoy it and for most people, the online multiplayer is the main reason for playing

2 player co-op

You can now do 2 player co operative play using split screen. You can go through the missions or you can go online and play others. There is a lan option too.

A nice addition.

Online Play

The servers were really dodgy for me the first few hours. They kept cutting out and after getting to level 4 and creating a few classes my ps3 crashed. When I went back in I couldnt connect. Eventually I got on and I was down to level 3. Clearly teething problems.

So whats multiplayer games like?

Here are the main changes from cod 4 :

* Different guns which are more retro etc
* Different frag grenades - regular frag, poison and molotov cocktail
* Different special grenades - smoke, signal flare (which is just a flash type weapon) and tabun gas (which disorientates players like the stun grenade used too).....haha theyre not really different are they!! :)
* There are now levels which have tanks
* Different levels (obviously)
* The ability to create your own squad and join others.
* Radar is reached after 3 kills but is now called plane recon or something to that effect
* After 5 kills you get artillery, which is pretty much the same as an air strike
* After 7 kills you get attack dogs instead of a helicopter. I'm not sure if they are more effective than a helicopter or not. When I first called them I got 5 kills but when I used it again I got none. I guess it's similar to the helicopter in cod4 in that respect.
* Prestige is achieved at level 65
* Additional custom gun slots are unlocked when you reach a certain number of prestigages : 1st prestige - one more custom, 2nd prestige - 2nd slot, 4th - 3rd custom slot, 7th prestige - 4th slot, 10th prestige - 5th slot
* After a game it shows you who your nemesis is and shows you how many times you killed them and how many times they killed you.

One thing they have improved is assists. You no longer just get 2 points. If you shoot a guy to bits and then someone gets the kill you could get 2,4,6 or even 8 points. It's a bit fairer and means you get credit for the shots you make.

Most of the levels seem more open plan than the last game. They give the appearance when you are first playing that the levels are much larger but I don't believe they are.

Is the multiplayer better than COD4s? It's too early to tell. I'm starting to know the levels a little better so I'm doing better. Plus only one of my friends got the game today as well. Another 5 or 6 are getting it on Friday so I might start enjoying it a little more once my friends come on and we go through it all together.

Summary

Bottom line, if you loved Call of Duty 4, you're going to love World at War. If you were not a big fan of the first one then give it a miss.

It's a must buy for anyone who plays Call of Duty online frequently.

Once you beat it, you will unlock that zombie mode I was talking about in the other thread.

Also nice review, I believe it's about the same as the 360 version. Those dogs were one of the best additions IMO.
